There is a story called 'Hatena no chawan' in one of the classic rakugo stories. It's about a man who could not make it in Edo, so he run away to Kyoto. There is a scene in which he sits on a bench of a tea house below the stage of Kiyomizu, and while he drinks a tea, he gets impressed with the brilliance of how the stage was built. This tea house still exists in the same place today, and when I look up the stage from there, I too got moved just as the character of the rakugo story.
Buildings of today, which are built with the current technology are built to last a few decades, and get demolished with no sympathy, I wonder how we should think about the buildings which were built hundreds of years ago and have withstood the rain and wind, for the time that they have been around, and yet they still continue to move people's minds.
