Taima-dera temple is located in Taima-machi, Nara Prefecture. The temple is famous for its Nara-period style national treasure, the three-storied East and West pagoda, and the Taima Mandala (pure land Buddhism). In Japan, Taima-dera temple is the only temple with both East and West Pagodas and these pagodas are peculiar in that their nine-ring ornamental spires only have eight rings. I remember being panicked when I painted these nine-ring ornamental spires in the past and I was told that I had one ring missing.
