2005 Season of verdure.jpg

I found this tree at Yoyogi Park. Its thick trunk was cruelly cut off, but the tree was still growing green leaves, I was touched to see that. This is a four sided folding screen painting that I submitted to the first Seisei-kai Exhibition. Apart from this painting, I also submitted another four-sided folding screen painting called “Minakami draped in snow” to the same exhibition. When I was making both paintings, I had Fusuma-e paintings that I was going to paint for Chishaku-in Temple in Kyoto in mind, and I actually used the same designs for the Fusuma-e paintings that I later painted for Chishaku-in Temple. I had done quite a bit of paintings by then with sumi ink only, so I had good command of using washi paper and sumi ink to paint, however, I still hesitate to call my paintings “Sumi-e” or “Suiboku-ga” as my expressions with the sumi ink is with my own style.
