I once spent more than two months making ten or more sketches of the simon bitter bamboos that grew by Nagakute’s bumpy and narrow road that cars could barely pass each other. I parked my van as close to the edge of the road as possible and set the easel and rolled around the top and the bottom of a tatami mat size paper on a panel and painted the actual size of the bamboo by sliding the paper little by little. It was during the hot and humid time of the year, before the summer holiday, and once in a while it was a pain going out because of the heat, but it was also a great feeling to see the sketch progressing little by little every day.
