Since I painted Fusuma-e paintings for the Eihei-ji temple, I started noticing how interesting the sumi ink paintings were. You would not get a second chance to undo a mistake when painting things with black ink, so it is a total hardball. This painting was a big challenge for me as I was to paint fully bloomed Shidare cherry blossom tree in sumi ink only. However, when I started painting, I was surprised with myself but the flowers started to bloom by themselves within the painting. It still was a hardball, but this painting was actually quite straight forward to complete. Even though, this painting is only painted with the sumi ink, I had some people tell me they felt some kind of pinkness in the painting. I realized that there are still a lot of possibilities with the sumi ink paintings.
