While I was working at Aichi University of the Arts, I often went to the Asuka region in Nara prefecture to make sketches. I especially liked the area around the Asuka River and I have painted that area quite a lot. I like the Asuka River covered in new green leaves, but I think the Asuka River is most beautiful around the harvest season in autumn. The current Asuka River is just an ordinary small stream, however during the Asuka era, cutting down of trees in the surrounding mountains was prohibited to secure its water source. The Asuka River is a historical river that has witnessed the ups and downs of history and it has been the theme in poems by many Japanese poets.
